Steps to coverage

Step 1: Connecting with Social Security

Step 1: Connecting with Social Security

The ideal time to connect with Social Security is 3 months before you reach 65 or, if you are 65 or older and stay on an employer-based health plan, connect with Social Security a few months before terminating your group health coverage. Your objective with Social Security is to confirm your entitlement for Part A of Medicare and to decide if applying for Part A and B at that time or later is appropriate. However, if prior to Age 65 you have started your Social Security income, you will automatically be enrolled in Parts A and B once you turn 65. (Click here for guidance about timing your application for Parts A and B.)

The ways to connect with Social Security:

Connecting Online

When you click on this link (https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/medicare/) you will be taken to a page that permits you to “Apply for Medicare Only”. This application is for Medicare benefits only NOT for retirement income. Additional information on this online process is here: https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10531.pdf

While you’re online you may want to also set up a “my Social Security account” for yourself by clicking here: https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/. With this account you’ll be able to review your earnings, see your latest Social Security statement, and request a new Social Security card or check on the status of an application.

Connecting by Phone for a Phone Call Enrollment or In-Person Appointment

If you prefer to use your phone, you can call Social Security 800.772.1213 to ask for a phone interview to confirm your entitlement to Part A and to enroll in Part B OR to do both with a scheduled in-person interview at your local Social Security office. For you convenience, we can also provide you with a number for your local Social Security office rather than have you connect through the national number. https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10531.pdf

Once your Parts A and B have been confirmed in a letter you will get from Social Security, you will receive a new Medicare card that shows the effective dates of your eligibility for in-patient (Part A) and out-patient (Part B) coverage. Now that you have Parts A and B, you are ready to take Step 2 towards Medicare success! It’s when we begin to get personally acquainted with you and gather the kinds of information we need to prepare our recommendation for your coverage choices. Step 2: Creating Coverage Around Your Priorities

Step 2: Creating Coverage Around Your Priorities

Here We Learn About You And Your Priorities

This step on your path to Medicare success starts with our learning more about you and your healthcare priorities during retirement. This will help us learn about your medical insurance experience prior to Medicare and what matters most to you going forward.

With your priorities in mind, our research will focus on creating a coverage strategy that matches a Medicare plan to your specific retirement outlook and financial resources. The coverage features we develop will be based on your personal medical preferences: benefit flexibility, provider and medical group types, preferred hospitals, drug formularies, plan premiums, out-of-pocket expenses and ancillary benefits (e.g., dental, vision, hearing, transportation, meals, gym membership, over-the-counter allowances, Part B premium offset, etc.).

In response to your sharing key information with us, in Step 3 we will provide you with the results of our expert Medicare coverage research. That research brings forward coverage options that will align with your healthcare preferences and retirement priorities. You will be able to choose between Supplemental (MediGap), Medicare Advantage and Part D drug plans.

When you click on the button below you can begin sharing some key information needed for the coverage planning we do next. This will get us started in the process of coverage planning that is customized to meet your needs and priorities.
